Bhubaneswar: In two separate tragic incidents in Bargarh district, an elderly couple and a married woman along with her paramour were found dead by hanging.
In the first case, an elderly couple was found hanging at their residence in Ganjiha Tikra village under Bargarh Sadar police limits late Friday night.
The deceased were identified as Kirati Pradhan (70) and his wife Shanti Pradhan (65). Family members said the couple had been under mental distress for some time, though the exact reason behind the extreme step is yet to be known. Police have started an investigation into the matter.
In a separate incident, a married woman and her alleged lover were found hanging from a mango tree near Bagarti Tikira under Attabira police limits.
The deceased were identified as Himanshu Bhuye (41) of Sabarpada area and a 35-year-old woman from Bagarti Tikira (name changed). According to reports, the two were in a relationship despite being married to other partners, which had led to strong objections from their respective families.
The duo had been missing for nearly a week before locals discovered their bodies hanging from a tree on Thursday night and informed the police. The bodies were recovered on Friday and sent for post-mortem. A case has been registered at Attabira Police Station and further investigation is underway.
Himanshu is survived by two children, while the woman was the mother of four.
Himanshu’s body was handed over to his family after autopsy. However, the woman’s family allegedly refused to receive her body, citing her elopement with a man from another caste. Her last rites were later performed by a local social organisation.
