Bhubaneswar: George Tirkey, a former MLA from Biramitrapur constituency in Sundargarh, passed away at the age of 67. The passing of George Tirkey was confirmed by his son.
He had been unwell for a few months and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar where he died. His last rites will be performed at his ancestral village Jhunmur.
Tirkey was a well-known labour and tribal leader and had represented the Biramitrapur constituency four times as an MLA in 1995, 2000, 2009, and 2014. He had won the elections on different party tickets, including Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), as an independent candidate, and from the Samata Kranti Dal.
Tirkey’s demise has sent shockwaves, and several prominent personalities have expressed their condolences. He will be remembered for his contributions to the labor and tribal communities in Odisha.
