Bhubaneswar: Miscreants have allegedly siphoned off more than ₹1 crore from the bank account of Baripada municipality in Mayurbhanj district in a major fraud, police said.
The incident came to light after the manager of UCO Bank’s Baripada branch, Sudhanshu Sekhar Samal, lodged a complaint with the police.
According to the complaint, fraudsters illegally withdrew ₹1.08 crore from the civic body’s account by manipulating account details. A person posing as a municipality employee had submitted a request to change the mobile number and email ID linked to the account.
Unaware of any fraudulent intent, bank officials reportedly processed the request, following which the miscreants gained control and siphoned off the funds.
Based on the complaint, Baripada Town Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, bank authorities said the amount of ₹1.08 crore has been restored to the Baripada municipality from the bank’s own resources.
The incident comes close on the heels of another major fraud in Mayurbhanj district, where miscreants had withdrawn ₹2.26 crore from the bank account of Betnoti block in a similar manner.
