Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted the possibility of a fresh low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to bring widespread rainfall across Odisha over the next seven days.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, a cyclonic circulation is currently active over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh at a height of 4.5 to 5.8 km above sea level. Favourable atmospheric conditions may lead to the formation of a low-pressure area in the coming days.
Senior meteorologist Dr. Manorama Mohanty informed that due to this system, Odisha is likely to experience frequent spells of rain and thunderstorms for the next seven days. The intensity of rainfall is expected to increase from July 13 onwards.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a yellow warning for several districts including Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj, where thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely in some places.
In the last 24 hours, rainfall was recorded at 13 places across the state, with the highest of 71 mm recorded at Gurundia in Sundargarh district. From June 1 to July 10, Odisha has received 341 mm of rainfall, which is 12% above the normal average.
While six districts have recorded excess rainfall and five districts have received normal to above-normal rainfall, four districts — Sundargarh, Nabarangapur, Deogarh, and Kalahandi — are still experiencing deficit rainfall.
The monsoon trough and associated weather systems are likely to keep the rainy conditions active across the state in the coming week.
