Bhubaneswar: In a significant crackdown against drug trafficking, police have seized approximately 2,811 kg (2.8 tonnes) of ganja worth crores of rupees from a remote hilltop hideout near Karigeju village under Adaba police station limits in Gajapati district.

Acting on specific intelligence, a special team led by R. Udayagiri SDPO Rakesh Kumar Sahu conducted an extensive search operation on Monday morning in the forested and hilly terrain around Karigeju village. During the raid, police recovered 113 plastic bags filled with the contraband hidden in the dense vegetation. The accused persons managed to flee the spot upon spotting the police team, but investigations are underway to identify and arrest them at the earliest.

A case has been registered against the unknown accused under Section 20(B)(ii)(C) of the NDPS Act at Adaba Police Station. This latest seizure adds to the district police’s impressive track record in the ongoing anti-narcotics campaign. In the recent period from late 2025 to early April 2026, Gajapati police have registered 15 cases and seized more than 12.5 tonnes of illegal ganja across Adaba and R. Udayagiri police station areas.

Notable recent hauls include 4,040 kg from the Keshariguda area under Adaba police station, 1,830 kg from Buripadar village under R. Udayagiri police station, and the current 2,811 kg from Karigeju forest. In the Adaba police station jurisdiction alone, 11 cases led to the seizure of 9,676 kg of ganja, while R. Udayagiri police station recorded seizures of over 2,825 kg in four cases. The intensified drive aligns with the Odisha Police’s statewide campaign against ganja cultivation and smuggling.

Strict instructions from Director General of Police Y.B. Khurania have led to sustained grassroots-level action to curb this illegal trade and dismantle the drug mafia networks operating in the region.
