Ganjam Shuts Schools For 3 Days Amid Heatwave

Berhampur: Amid intensifying heatwave conditions across Odisha, the district administration in Ganjam has ordered the closure of all schools for three days, from April 21 to April 23, citing concerns over student safety.

Officials said the decision was taken as soaring temperatures continue to pose serious health risks, particularly for children. The precautionary measure comes as several parts of the state reel under extreme heat, with 14 locations recording temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or above on Sunday. Jharsuguda emerged as the hottest place at 43.3 degrees Celsius.

Despite the suspension of regular classes, authorities have clarified that examinations will be conducted as per the guidelines of the Odisha School Education Programme Authority. Schools have been directed to ensure adequate arrangements at examination centres, including the provision of safe drinking water, oral rehydration solution (ORS), and mandatory first-aid facilities to manage any heat-related emergencies.

The administration further stated that student enrolment activities will continue during the closure period.

Officials emphasised that the move is a preventive step aimed at safeguarding students amid the prevailing heatwave, which is expected to persist over the coming days.
