Global Preparedness Key To Fighting Future Outbreaks: Naveen Patnaik

Bhubaneswar: Former Odisha Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik marked the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness today by reflecting on the state’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and calling for continued global vigilance against future outbreaks.

In a post on X, Patnaik recalled the devastating impact of the COVID-19 crisis, which overwhelmed healthcare systems worldwide, disrupted economies, and resulted in millions of deaths. He praised Odisha’s disaster preparedness and the cooperation of its people.

“The world faced an unprecedented crisis during the #COVID19 pandemic. It overwhelmed health systems, shattered livelihoods, and claimed millions of lives. Yet, through our globally recognised disaster preparedness and the cooperation of our people, we saved thousands of lives—guided by the conviction that #EveryLifeIsPrecious. On this #InternationalDayofEpidemicPreparedness, let us remember, preparedness is humanity’s collective shield against future outbreaks”, read Patnaik’s post.

It is pertinent to note that the first ever International Day of Epidemic Preparedness, being held on 27 December 2020, was called for by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate the importance of the prevention of, preparedness for and partnership against epidemics.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of investing in systems to prevent, detect and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.
