Berhampur: Police claimed to have busted a gold loot racket while trying to crack a burglary case in the city.
Nimakhandi police has arrested four members of the racket while two others are still at large.
The main accused, Sania Gouda was arrested from Visakhapatnam.
According to police, one Kali Charon Panda of Bijaya Vihar under Nimakhandi police limits had filed a complaint that some unknown miscreants looted gold and silver ornaments of more than 400 grams each from his house.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and formed a special team to investigate the case.
The team, on the basis of clues, arrested the main culprit Sonia Gouda of Old Berhampur.
During interrogation, he confessed to have committed a number of burglary cases in different police station areas of Berhampur.
Based on the statement of Gouda, police arrested his associate Mohan Padhy, branch manager of Muthood Finance of Sanabazar branch. Padhy used to assist the accused in the disposal of stolen ornaments to one Santosh Gaikward, Berhampur SP Sarvana Vivek M said.
Gaikward owns a gold testing center in Berhampur. Police raided the centre and seized 2.728 kg of stolen gold ornaments and cash of Rs 26. 38 lakh.
Police handed over the cash to the I-T department for investigation, the SP added.
