Bhubaneswar: Gopalpur police arrested three more persons in connection with the gang-rape of a 20-year-old college student at Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district, bringing the total number of arrests to 10.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday evening when the victim and her male friend visited the beach to celebrate the Raja festival. A group of 10 men allegedly consumed alcohol and approached them.
The accused allegedly molested the female student. When her male friend protested, the youths assaulted him and gang-raped the female student, according to the complaint filed at the police station.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim, who is an undergraduate student at a private college, Gopalpur police registered a case and initiated an investigation.
Gopalpur police initially detained seven people suspected of involvement in the crime. After further investigation, three more suspects were apprehended while trying to flee to another state.
Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M confirmed that a special team has been formed to expedite the investigation and ensure justice for the victim. The police have also visited the crime scene and collected evidence.
