Bhubaneswar: In a significant step towards advancing Odisha’s green energy ambitions, GRIDCO signed a landmark agreement with M/s Avaada Green H2 Pvt Ltd. under the OERC Green Energy Open Access Regulations, 2023.
According to an official press release, the agreement provides a Green Power Banking Facility for 300 MW to support Avaada’s upcoming 0.5 MTPA Green Ammonia Plant at Gopalpur, Ganjam. The facility will be operational for 25 years, starting from December 31, 2028.
This agreement underscores Odisha’s position as the leading state in India for the development of Green Hydrogen and Ammonia, driven by its conducive policy environment, robust infrastructure for green power, well-developed seaports, and a growing domestic demand for green hydrogen/ammonia in industries such as fertilizers, steel, metals, and oil refineries.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister-cum-Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo highlighted Odisha’s progress in the green energy sector.
He stated, “So far, we have approved 14 Green Hydrogen/Ammonia Projects in the state, with a proposed investment of approximately Rs. 2 Lakh Crores. These projects are expected to generate employment opportunities for 22,000 people.”
The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized that renewable power is a critical component, alongside water, for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia. He added, “Odisha has created a favorable ecosystem by offering opportunities and incentives for setting up renewable energy (RE) projects.
Recognizing the intermittent nature of RE power generation, we have introduced provisions for Green Energy Banking, ensuring a round-the-clock supply of green power to hydrogen and ammonia developers. In fact, Odisha is among the few states in the country to implement such a mechanism.”
This agreement marks a landmark achievement in establishing Odisha as a hub for the green hydrogen and ammonia industry, further solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable energy development.
