Bhubaneswar: GRIDCO, the state public sector undertaking (PSU) which carries out business of transmission and bulk supply of electricity has purchased a total of 27995 million units (MU) of electricity from different sources in 2022-23 (from April to December), informed Energy Minister Pratap Keshari Deb in the Odisha Assembly today.
Responding to a query from BJP Member Kusum Tete, the Minister quoting from data provided by GRIDCO told the House that out of the 27995 MU of electricity, GRIDCO has sold 24524 MU of electricity to different distribution companies, 82 MU to IMFA & NALCO and 2629 MU through Trading/Banking/Deviation after deducting transmission loss during the aforementioned period.
The Minister stated that by 31st December 2022, GRIDCO had a total loan burden of Rs 6522 crore.
Deb informed the House that GRIDCO is taking the following steps to repay the aforementioned loan burden:
- As per the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (OERC’s) vesting order Tata Power after collecting the arrears of the distribution companies acquired by it is depositing it with GRIDCO.
- GRIDCO’s losses have been reduced to some extent by selling excess electricity.
- Emphasis is being laid on affordable power purchase agreements by cancelling high value power distribution.
- That apart, following approval of the State government Rs 2039.69 crore towards GRIDCO’s loan has been converted as Government’s share capital.
