Cuttack: The Orissa High Court on Wednesday ordered Puri Municipality to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the four-year-old child who died after being mauled by a stray dog in December 2016.
A division bench of the High Court comprising of acting Chief Justice Dr Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi and Justice MS Raman issued the order after conducting a hearing on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Bibhuti Charan Mohanty.
According to details of the case, a four-year-old boy, Satyabrata Rout while playing near his house in Jagannath Colony under Kumbharpada police limits of Puri town was mauled by a stray dog on December 1, 2016.
Satyabrata was admitted to a hospital in critical condition. However, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
It being a sensitive matter, advocate Bibhuti Charan Mohanty filed a PIL in the High Court seeking Rs 10 lakh compensation for the family of the deceased boy.
The Opposite Party citing that payment of Rs 10 lakh compensation was not within the purview of Puri Municipality, informed the court that Rs 30,000 from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and Rs 20,000 from Red Cross has been paid to the family of the deceased.
The petitioner argued that the aforementioned amount was not suitable.
After hearing both sides, division bench of acting Chief Justice Dr Justice Sarangi and
Justice Raman ordered for payment of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased.
