Balangir: Tension prevailed in Deogaon area of Balangir district on Thursday after the headless body of an unidentified man was found floating in a pond.
According to preliminary information, the body was spotted in a pond near Bagada village, located close to the village water tank, under Deogaon police station limits. Locals who noticed the body immediately informed the police.
A team from Deogaon police station reached the spot and fished out the body. Police suspect the man may have been murdered and his head severed before the body was dumped in the pond in an attempt to destroy evidence and conceal the crime.
As part of the investigation, police have launched a search for the missing head, which could help in establishing the identity of the deceased and the motive behind the killing.
The body has been taken into police custody and sent for post-mortem examination. Officials said further examination and forensic analysis are expected to provide crucial clues. Police are also questioning local residents and scanning the surrounding area to determine if the deceased had any connection with the village.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway to trace the culprits.
