Bhubaneswar: Health & Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling on Sunday visited Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela to inquire about the condition of an undergraduate female student who sustained nearly 90% burn injuries after allegedly attempting self-immolation in Sundergarh district.
He was accompanied by Raghunathpali MLA Durga Charan Tanti.
Speaking to reporters, Minister Mahaling said he had discussed the girl’s advanced treatment with the Executive Director of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.
“I have spoken with the girl’s mother about her health. If required, she can be airlifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar or Delhi. I have also directed the Sundergarh District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, and District Chief Medical Officer to keep me updated on her condition at regular intervals,” he added.
The minister further expressed his concern, stating, “I pray to the almighty for the girl’s speedy recovery.”
According to police, the incident occurred late Friday night in the Lanjiberna area while the victim’s family members were asleep.
Sundergarh Superintendent of Police Amritpal Kaur said, “A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the case. Preliminary investigations indicate that he was harassing the female student.”
The victim’s mother told reporters that her daughter had received a threatening call prior to the incident.
