Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department on Tuesday forecast light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in several districts of Odisha over the next few days, with a yellow warning issued for lightning and gusty winds between March 27 and 29.

According to the evening bulletin from the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, no significant synoptic system currently prevails over the region. However, localized weather activity is expected to trigger thunderstorms in northern, coastal and southern districts in phases.

On March 25, light rain or thundershowers are likely at isolated places in districts such as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Gajapati and Ganjam, while most other areas are expected to remain dry. Similar conditions are forecast to continue over the next two days, with southern districts like Koraput, Rayagada and Malkangiri witnessing sporadic rainfall.

The weather is expected to intensify from March 27, with the IMD issuing a yellow warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 40–50 kmph in several districts, including Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Balangir, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak.

The alert will remain in place on March 28 as well, covering parts of northern, coastal and southern Odisha.

Meanwhile, day temperatures are likely to rise gradually by 2–4 degrees Celsius over the next three days across the state, with no major change thereafter.

On Tuesday, western Odisha recorded some of the highest temperatures, with Titlagarh at 38.5°C and Bhawanipatna at 38°C. Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6°C.

For the state capital and adjoining areas, the IMD has forecast a partly cloudy sky over the next 24 hours, with temperatures likely to hover around 36°C (maximum) and 21°C (minimum).

No weather warning has been issued for fishermen along the Odisha coast for the next five days, the bulletin added.
