Heatwave Persists In Odisha As Monsoon Edges Closer

Bhubaneswar: Temperatures soared to 40 degrees Celsius in two places of Odisha on Friday, with Angul recording the highest at 40.1 degrees Celsius followed by Nayagarh at 40 degrees Celsius.

Other districts also experienced intense heat as Phulabani recorded 39.7 degrees, Talcher 39.5 degrees, Bhubaneswar 38.9 degrees, Sonepur 38.7 degrees and Malkangiri 38.2 degrees.

Meanwhile, conditions have become favourable for the advance of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar Islands during the next 24 hours. A well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal continues to persist in the same region and the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Warning for thunderstorm activity on Saturday.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur in the afternoon or evening hours at one or two places over Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati and Rayagada districts.

In addition, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are expected at one or two places over Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Malkangiri, Koraput, Sundargarh, Dhenkanal and Angul districts. Residents in these areas have been advised to take necessary precautions during the afternoon and evening hours.
