Bhubaneswar: With just one day remaining for the grand Rath Yatra, Puri has received extremely heavy rainfall, raising concerns over the smooth conduct of the festival.
According to the Meteorological Centre of Bhubaneswar, 143.8 mm of rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours (from 0830 hrs IST on 14 July to 0830 hrs IST on 15 July). The city also experienced rain accompanied by thunderstorm activity.
According to The latest nowcast issued at 10:00 am today remains valid for the next 6 hours. It predicts generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain and thunderstorm likely over Puri. Day temperature is expected to remain between 27–29°C with very high humidity (88–98%).Realised weather at 0830 hrs IST today showed a temperature of 25.4°C and humidity of 98%.
The IMD has urged pilgrims to exercise caution during the festival. Pilgrims have been advised to remain alert during lightning and thunderstorm activity. In case of heavy rain, lightning, or strong winds, they should immediately move to a safe, permanent shelter and avoid taking shelter under trees, electric poles, or temporary structures. Devotees are also requested to wear non-slip footwear and remain cautious on wet and slippery surfaces, particularly around the Grand Road (Bada Danda).
The Met department has further advised everyone to stay well hydrated, keep mobile phones charged, and regularly monitor official weather updates as monsoon conditions can change rapidly. Elderly devotees, children, and people with medical conditions have been asked to avoid prolonged exposure to rain and crowded areas.
