Heavy Rain Likely In Odisha: IMD Issues Orange Alert For Multiple Districts

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday has issued a fresh alert forecasting widespread rainfall activity over Odisha, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in several districts over the next two days due to the formation of a low-pressure system over Gangetic West Bengal and its adjoining areas.

According to the midday bulletin issued by the IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar on Friday, a cyclonic circulation over northern parts of Gangetic West Bengal persists and extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestward with height. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to develop within the next 24 hours. A trough also extends from the northeast Arabian Sea to this system, passing through Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.

The southwest monsoon has been active across Odisha, with light to moderate rainfall recorded at most places and heavy showers reported in Kendrapada, Bhadrak, and Kalahandi districts.

Rainfall and Thunderstorm Alerts:

Day 1 (Till 8:30 AM, July 6)

Orange Warning (Be Prepared): Heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with gusty winds (30–40 kmph) is expected in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Jharsuguda.

Yellow Warning (Be Aware):

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Koraput, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Bolangir, and Nuapada.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur.

Day 2 (From 8:30 AM, July 6 to 8:30 AM, July 7)

Orange Warning: Very heavy rain likely in Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar.

Yellow Warning:

Heavy rain and thunderstorms in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bargarh, Sonepur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nabarangpur, Koraput, and Rayagada.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur.

Day 3 (July 7–8)

Yellow Warning: Heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Bargarh.

Day 4 (July 8–9)

Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall may occur in Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Sundargarh.

Day 5 (July 9–10)

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places across the state.

The IMD has advised residents and local administrations in affected districts to stay alert and take precautionary measures, especially in areas prone to waterlogging, lightning, and gusty winds.
