Bhubaneswar: The Hirakud Dam authorities will open the gates again as heavy rain in the upstream catchment of the Mahanadi river has led to a sharp rise in water inflow.
A siren was sounded on Saturday evening to alert people residing in the lower catchment areas of the Mahanadi.
The dam authorities have asked residents living along the river banks to remain vigilant. Officials said continuous rainfall triggered by a low pressure system has led to a large volume of flood water entering the reservoir from upstream. Due to this, the water level in the dam is constantly rising.
To manage the inflow and maintain the dam’s safety level, the authorities have decided to release water by opening the gates once again. People in downstream districts have been advised to stay away from the river and follow the instructions issued by local administration.
