Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday forecast cloudy skies with light rain in Puri over the next six hours and advised devotees participating in the ongoing Rath Yatra festivities to remain alert amid the possibility of thunderstorm activity.

According to a nowcast weather forecast issued by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar at 4:00 pm, the weather in Puri is expected to remain cloudy with light rain. The forecast predicts temperatures between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius and relative humidity ranging from 85 to 90 per cent during the period.

The IMD said the weather forecast has been issued in connection with the Puri Rath Yatra, considering the large gathering of pilgrims in the coastal town.

As of 2:30 pm, Puri recorded a temperature of 29.4 degrees Celsius, relative humidity of 88 per cent, hazy to cloudy conditions, and 0.2 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm.

The weather office urged pilgrims to remain vigilant during lightning and thunderstorm activity. In the event of heavy rain, lightning or strong winds, devotees have been advised to move to permanent shelters until conditions improve and avoid taking shelter under trees, electric poles or temporary structures.

The IMD also advised visitors to keep track of official weather updates, stay hydrated, wear non-slip footwear due to slippery road conditions around the Grand Road (Bada Danda), keep mobile phones charged, and protect mobile phones, valuables and important documents in waterproof bags or pouches.

Elderly devotees, children and people with medical conditions have been advised to avoid prolonged exposure to rain and crowded areas. The weather office also cautioned pilgrims against bathing during high tide and rough sea conditions.
