Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds across several districts of Odisha, with weather conditions likely to persist till May 3, 2026.
According to the IMD’s mid-day bulletin, thunderstorms with lightning and wind speeds reaching 30–40 kmph are likely to occur during the afternoon and evening hours at one or two places over Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Gajapati, Rayagada, and Koraput districts.
The weather agency has also cautioned about hot and humid conditions likely to prevail at isolated places over Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts on April 28 and 29.
In a separate forecast, IMD has warned of more intense thunderstorm activity with gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph at several locations across the state. Districts likely to be affected include Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Nuapada, Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Kendrapara, Khurda, Nayagarh, Puri, Sambalpur, Sonepur, and Deogarh.
The IMD has advised residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions, especially during thunderstorm activity in open areas. It has also urged people to follow safety guidelines to avoid lightning-related risks.
