Bhubaneswar: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Yellow’ warning for hot and humid conditions, along with the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h, which are very likely to occur in the afternoon and evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Odisha on May 9, 2025.
According to the IMD’s mid-day weather bulletin, hot and humid conditions are expected to prevail at one or two places in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati on May 9.
Furthermore, the IMD has predicted a ‘Yellow’ warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 40-50 km/h, likely to occur in the afternoon and evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Malkangiri. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h are also expected at one or two places in the districts of Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Angul, Boudh, Bolangir, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal.
In addition, the IMD has forecasted light to moderate rain or thundershowers in the afternoon and evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Boudh, Bolangir, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal. Dry weather is expected to prevail in the rest of the districts across the state on May 9.
The IMD has also predicted that hot and humid conditions will continue to prevail at one or two places over the districts of Odisha from May 10 to May 14, 2025.
In light of the weather conditions, the IMD has issued guidelines to avoid heat exposure. Citizens are advised to wear lightweight, light-colored, loose cotton clothes, cover their heads with a cloth, hat, or umbrella, and use oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), sugarcane juice, lemon water, and buttermilk to stay hydrated.
It is also recommended to drink sufficient water even if not feeling thirsty to prevent dehydration.
