IMD Issues Yellow Warning For Thunderstorms In Southern Odisha; Heat Wave To Grip Western Dists

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department’s Bhubaneswar centre has forecast light to moderate rain or thunderstorms at isolated places over southern districts of Odisha in the coming week, while issuing a yellow warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) in the afternoon and evening hours. At the same time, heat wave conditions are likely to prevail at isolated places over western and interior districts, with hot and humid weather persisting along the coast.

In its midday weather bulletin issued at 2 pm on Saturday, the IMD said an upper-air cyclonic circulation over north coastal Odisha and neighbourhood persists at 1.5 km above mean sea level. Light to moderate rainfall occurred at one or two places over Ganjam, Gajapati and Deogarh districts in the past 24 hours, with chief amounts recorded at Bhanjnagar (3 cm) in Ganjam and Mahendragarh (1 cm) in Gajapati. Dry weather prevailed elsewhere in the state.

Maximum temperatures fell by 2-3°C at a few places in north interior Odisha, remaining largely unchanged elsewhere. The day’s highest maximum was 43.5°C at Titilagarh, while the lowest minimum temperature was 22.2°C at Kendrapada.

Day-wise outlook (valid from 0830 hrs IST):

Day 1 (up to 0830 hrs, 19 April): Light to moderate rain/thunderstorm likely at one or two places over Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Ganjam and Gajapati; dry elsewhere. Yellow warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in these districts.

Day 2-3 (19-21 April): Similar rain/thunder activity confined to southern districts, with heat wave conditions at isolated places over Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bolangir, Nuapada, Sambalpur, Kalahandi and Bargarh.

Day 4-7 (21-25 April): Thunderstorms restricted mainly to Koraput and Malkangiri, while heat wave warnings continue over western districts. Warm night conditions are likely at isolated places over Sundargarh, Bolangir and Sambalpur throughout the period. Hot and humid conditions will prevail at isolated places over coastal and adjoining districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.

Maximum (day) temperatures are expected to show no large change during the next five days, followed by a fall of 2-3°C thereafter.

Bhubaneswar forecast (next 24 hours): Partly cloudy sky becoming generally cloudy towards afternoon/evening/night. Maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be around 38°C and 28°C respectively.

The bulletin also noted warm night conditions and hot-humid weather warnings for several districts.
