IMD Issues Yellow Warning For Thunderstorms, Lightning & Gusty Winds Across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department’s Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, has issued a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong gusty surface winds in multiple districts of Odisha during the afternoon and evening hours on Tuesday, according to its Midday Weather Bulletin.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely at one or two places over Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Similar activity with winds of 30-40 kmph is forecast at one or two places over Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely at one or two places over these 24 districts, while dry weather will prevail elsewhere in the state. Hot and humid conditions are also expected at isolated places over the coastal districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.

Light to moderate rainfall has already occurred at one or two places. Chief amounts (in cm) include: Khajuripada (Kandhamal) – 3, Tiring, Chandua Kuliana, Kusumi, Suliapada, Bahalda, Bangiriposi, Chandanpur (all Mayurbhanj) – 1-2, and scattered 1 cm in Ganjam, Keonjhargarh.

Maximum temperatures showed an appreciable fall of about 3°C in parts of South Interior Odisha and a slight rise in South Coastal Odisha. The highest maximum temperature was 42.5°C at Titilagarh, while the lowest minimum was 19.1°C at Keonjhar.

Outlook for Next Few Days

Day 2 (22-23 April): Similar thunderstorm activity with 30-40 kmph gusts likely over Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, coastal districts and southern districts; hot & humid conditions persist in coastal areas.

Day 3 (23-24 April): Thunderstorms likely over northern and coastal districts; isolated heat wave in Jharsuguda, Balangir and Angul; warm night conditions in Kalahandi, Sundergarh, Bolangir and Sambalpur.

Day 4 & 5 (24-26 April): Thunderstorms shift to southern and coastal districts; heat wave conditions continue in western and central districts (Jharsuguda, Balangir, Kandhamal, Angul).

Day 6 & 7 (26-28 April): Limited thunderstorm activity confined to Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri; no major warnings.

Subsequent 3 days (28 April–1 May): No large change expected.

Maximum (day) temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged for the next four days across Odisha before falling by 2-3°C thereafter.

Bhubaneswar Forecast (Next 24 Hours): Partly cloudy sky with possibility of thunderstorm/lightning. While maximum temperature is likely to be around 37°C, minimum temperature is expected to around 27°C.

The bulletin advises people in warned districts to remain vigilant against lightning and strong winds.
