IMD Predicts Week-Long Kalbaishakhi Activity In Odisha; Issues Orange, Yellow Alerts

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a detailed seven-day weather forecast for Odisha, warning of widespread thunderstorm activity, lightning, gusty winds and intermittent rainfall across multiple districts, with an Orange Warning for Day 1 and continued Yellow Warnings through the week.

The Midday Weather Bulletin from the Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar indicated that while no major synoptic system is active, prevailing conditions remain favourable for Kalbaishakhi-type thunderstorms, which have already caused casualties and damage in parts of the state.

Seven-Day District Forecast & Warnings

Day 1 (till May 6 morning):

A statewide spell of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms is expected.

Orange Warning: Thunderstorms with lightning, hailstorm and gusty winds (50–60 kmph) likely in Angul, Deogarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Sundargarh. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and gusty winds in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal.

Yellow Warning: Moderate thunderstorms (30–50 kmph winds) across most remaining districts including Kandhamal, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Khurda, Puri, Koraput and Malkangiri

Day 2 (May 6–7):

Rain/thunderstorms to continue across coastal and southern districts, with scattered activity elsewhere.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorms with lightning and winds up to 30–50 kmph across nearly all districts, with slightly higher intensity in Mayurbhanj.

Day 3 (May 7–8):

Rainfall activity reduces but persists in coastal, southern and northern districts.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorms (30–40 kmph winds) in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar.

Day 4 (May 8–9):

Rainfall confined mainly to north coastal and adjoining districts.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorms in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur.

Day 5 (May 9–10):

Further reduction in spatial spread. Rain/thunderstorms limited to Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak.

Yellow Warning continues for these districts.

Day 6 (May 10–11):

Similar weather pattern persists with localized thunderstorm activity over northern Odisha.

Yellow Warning for the same four districts.

Day 7 (May 11–12):

No major change; isolated thunderstorm activity likely in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak with Yellow Warning.

Outlook (May 12–15):

IMD forecasts no significant change in weather conditions.

People have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid shelter under trees, unplug electrical appliances, and follow traffic advisories.

Light to moderate rainfall has already been recorded across several districts, with heavy rainfall in Angul. The highest temperature touched 42°C in Boudh, while Kendrapada recorded the lowest minimum at 18.2°C. Day temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged over the next week.

Squally weather with wind speeds up to 60 kmph is expected along the north Odisha coast on May 5, with rough to very rough sea conditions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.

For Bhubaneswar, IMD forecast a partly cloudy sky with chances of rain or thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, with temperatures around 34°C (max) and 24°C (min).
