IMD Warns Of Thunderstorms And Strong Winds In Odisha Districts Till May 22

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange and yellow warning for several districts in Odisha, predicting moderate to light thunderstorms with lightning, hail, and strong winds accompanied by light to moderate rain till May 19.

Below is a date-wise weather prediction made by the regional weather office:

May 16: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph are very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Angul, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj and Nabarangapur. These districts have been issued orange warnings.

Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Sundargarh.  These districts are under yellow warnings.

Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Bargarh, Nuapada, Kandhamal, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Boudh, Kalahandi, Dhenkanal, Jajpur.

Besides, hot and humid conditions are very likely to prevail at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar.

May 17: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Nabarangapur, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh and Mayurbhanj. These districts have been issued yellow warnings.

Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Angul, Keonjhar, Puri, Khurda, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal. These districts are under yellow alert.

That apart, hot and humid conditions are very likely to prevail at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.

May 18: Thunderstorms with lightning with gusty surface wind speeds reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Nayagarh, Gajapati, Ganjam, Koraput, and Rayagada. These districts have been issued yellow warnings.

Hot and humid conditions are very likely to prevail at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.

May 19: Thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh. These districts are under yellow alert.

Meanwhile, the regional weather office has advised people to keep watch on the weather and take safe shelter during the thunderstorm activity to protect themselves from lightning and follow traffic advisories in urban areas. Also, harvesting of crops may be regulated judicially, and farmers are advised to use hail nets to protect vegetables and crops from hail.
