Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange warning for nine Odisha districts for tomorrow, predicting thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 50-60 kmph at one or two places.
The IMD has issued orange alert to Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Gajapati are under the orange alert. People in these districts have been advised to be prepared to take action and avoid venturing out during thunderstorms.
Besides, a yellow warning has also been issued for 21 districts. Thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 40-50 kmph are likely at one or two places over Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.
IMD has further forecast heavy rainfall during afternoon and evening hours at one or two places in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts under the yellow warning.
For June 21, IMD prediction reads: “Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching upto 50-60 kmph) are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Gajapati.” IMD has issued orange alert to these districts.
Going by June 21 prediction, districts such as Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabrangpur, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching upto 40-50 kmph). These districts have been put under yellow alert.
Additionally, heavy rainfall is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Bhadrak on June 21
The weather department has urged farmers and residents in affected areas to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid standing under trees, and keep away from electrical poles and wires. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
