Malkangiri: Incessant rain since the last three days has triggered a major landslide in Nakamamudi Panchayat in Odisha’s Malkangiri district on Thursday cutting off 19 villages in the region from the mainland.
According to reports, the road from Orangi in Khairpur block in the district to Bayapada Ghat collapsed completely as large rocks and chunks of debris came crashing on it today from the adjacent hill due to very heavy rain in the area. As a result vehicular traffic has been disrupted completely, while around 3,000 people residing in the region have been cut off from the mainland. The only way they can now connect with the mainland is by crossing the Chitrakunda reservoir by country boat.
The road was constructed only two years ago and now clearance of debris and repair of the road has become difficult owing to the continuous heavy rain. Meanwhile, the water level in several rivers in the district is rising rapidly threatening a flood-like situation.
The district Collector has directed all concerned staff to take necessary actions to evacuate the residents in the low-lying areas and take them to safer places.
