Bhubaneswar: The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has once again found itself at the centre of controversy after announcing plans to hold an untimely Rath Yatra (Festival of Chariot) of Lord Jagannath in London on May 18.
The event, publicised online, invites devotees and followers of the Hare Krishna movement to participate in cultural events, devotional kirtans, yoga sessions, and a special appearance by YouTuber Govind Krishna Das.
The move has drawn sharp criticism from Jagannath devotees in Odisha and servitors of the Puri Shree Jagannath Temple, who have demanded action against ISKCON for allegedly violating the traditional roots of Jagannath culture. This is not the first time ISKCON has faced criticism for its handling of Jagannath-related events.
The servitors have expressed strong objections to ISKCON’s decision, citing the importance of adhering to traditional practices and protocols surrounding the Rath Yatra. The controversy has sparked a heated debate about cultural sensitivity and the role of religious organizations in preserving traditional heritage.
