Bhubaneswar: An ITI student allegedly died by suicide at his maternal uncle’s house in Keonjhar district after his family reportedly refused to buy him a new mobile phone on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Sailesh Mahanta, a native of Balasore district. He was staying with his maternal uncle’s family at Guludiposi village under Baria police station limits while pursuing his ITI studies.

According to reports, Sailesh had recently asked his family to buy him a new mobile phone. However, the family did not meet his demand. Upset over this, he allegedly hanged himself with a piece of cloth from a mango tree behind his uncle’s house on Wednesday morning.

Family members spotted him hanging and immediately rushed him to Bhanda Community Health Centre (CHC), where doctors declared him brought dead.

On being informed, Baria police reached the hospital, seized the body, and sent it for post-mortem.

A case of unnatural death has been registered and further investigation is underway.
