Kendrapara: In a tragic incident, a jail warder was found hanging inside his barrack at Barimul Jail in Kendrapara district on Friday.
The deceased, identified as Bijay Parida, belongs to Athagarh area of Cuttack. He returned to his barrack after completing his duty around 12 noon on Friday. When other staff returned to the barrack later in the evening, they found Bijay hanging from the ceiling fan.
On being informed, Bijay’s family members rushed to Kendrapara. Officials from Kendrapara Sadar Police Station, along with a scientific team and jail authorities arrived at the scene to investigate the matter.
His family members alleged that his death was not a case of suicide but a murder. Bijay is survived by his 3-year-old daughter and wife.
Family members said that he had been in a relationship with Rashmi Rekha, a woman from the nearby village of Kapursingh in Cuttack district before his marrige.
“Bijay was in a relationship with Rashmi Rekha from a nearby area, but Rashmi backed out and her family violently confronted Bijay at Kendrapara Jail, threatening him. We suspect the role of her family behind Bijay’s death,” said Bijay’s brother, Jitendra Parida.
Jail superintendent Babuli Barik denied commenting on the allegation of Bijay’s family members. He said that Bijay died by suicide and the reason is being investigated.
“Bijay worked from 6 am to 12 pm. His colleagues found him hanging from a fan. We immediately informed his family and launched an investigation to ascertain the reason of his death,” said.
