Jajpur: A woman was sentenced to life imprisonment by an Additional District and Sessions Court here on Thursday for murdering her husband at their rented house in Pragati Vihar under Mangalpur police station limits in 2021.
The convict, Mamata Kuanr, wife of deceased Atal Kuanr alias Subash, was found guilty of killing her husband following a family dispute. According to the prosecution, Mamata strangled Atal, who was asleep, using a pillow and a charger cord.
The incident came to light after Atal’s brother Ranjan Kumar Kuanr lodged a complaint with Mangalpur police. Police subsequently arrested Mamata along with Ajay Samal and Krishna Sethi and filed the case before the court.
During the trial, the prosecution examined 15 witnesses and produced 36 documents in support of its case. After examining the evidence, Additional District and Sessions Judge Bisweswar Biswoprakash Ray sentenced Mamata to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
The court ordered that she would undergo an additional 12 months of imprisonment if she failed to pay the fine.
However, Samal and Sethi were acquitted for want of sufficient evidence against them.
Public Prosecutor Kulamani Nayak and Additional Public Prosecutor Biplab Kumar Muduli conducted the case on behalf of the prosecution.
