Jajpur: A court in Jajpur district has sentenced a man to rigorous life imprisonment for the murder of a woman in 2020, besides imposing a fine of Rs 10,000.
Additional District and Sessions Judge of Chandikhol, Gopabandhu Gadnayak, pronounced the verdict after examining the statements of 18 witnesses.
According to the case records, on January 28, 2020, Basant Kumar Sahu of Nayapatana village under Byree police station lodged a written complaint at Chhatia beat house alleging that his mother, Satyabhama Sahu, was attacked inside their house by Dinabandhu Sahu and his son Soumyaranjan Sahu.
The incident allegedly took place around 11.30 am when no other family members were present at home. The accused allegedly entered the house, abused Satyabhama in vulgar language and assaulted her. When she resisted, the father-son duo allegedly hit her on the head with an iron rod, leaving her seriously injured and unconscious.
After receiving information about the incident from local residents, Basant and others reached the spot and rushed Satyabhama to a nearby medical facility. However, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, Byree police registered a case and launched an investigation. During the trial, the prosecution examined 18 witnesses.
After considering the evidence, the court convicted Dinabandhu Sahu under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced him to rigorous life imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 and directed that he undergo an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment in case of default in payment of the fine.
