Jayapur: The traditional annual Khanda Puja (sword worship) of the Koraput District Kshetriya Khandayat Paika Samaj was held at Moti Mahal in the Jayapur Royal Palace complex on Monday, commemorating the martial heritage and cultural traditions associated with Jayapur Dussehra.
The ritual was performed in the presence of Jayapur Yuvaraj Bisweshwar Chandra Chud Dev. A large procession started from Moti Mahal and proceeded to the Dussehra grounds, with district-level workers participating in the programme.
Khanda Puja, also known as Shastra Pujan, is an integral part of the region’s traditional observances associated with Vijaya Dashami. The worship of weapons symbolises strength, courage and victory, reflecting the historical association of the former royal family with the Dussehra celebrations.
Jayapur Dussehra is distinguished by its blend of royal traditions, tribal customs and community participation. One of its unique features is Lathi Pujan, the worship of sacred bamboo staffs brought by tribal communities from different villages. The staffs are revered as symbols of their respective village deities and occupy a special place in the region’s cultural heritage.
Historically, the festival drew attention for the participation of the King, the arrival of tribal chieftains and traditional processions. These customs have continued even after the end of the monarchy, with local communities preserving and passing them on to successive generations.
The traditional Dussehra Bhetghat, or community gathering, also serves as a platform for people to exchange greetings, strengthen social bonds and reaffirm their commitment to preserving the region’s cultural identity.
The annual observances in Jayapur thus extend beyond religious rituals, reflecting the enduring relationship between the region’s royal legacy, tribal traditions and social unity.
