Jharsuguda: Police today made a startling revelation about the horrific incident in which three members of a family with gunshot wounds were found dead inside a car in the Lakhanpur area of Jharsuguda.

The deceased are Sujir Ray, his wife Khusbu Ray and his seven-year-old daughter Arpita Ray.

It is learnt from the preliminary investigation that Sujit was under severe mental agony after losing a huge amount in online gambling. His mental distress led to the shocking crime, Jharsuguda SP Parmar Smit Parshottamdas said at a press meet.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Sujit first fired at his wife and daughter before shooting self at his chest, the SP added.

“It seems that he was under distress over the financial implication of the gambling. He took such an extreme step out of such distress,” the SP informed.

“From technical and financial investigation and the mobile call records, it is primarily known that the man was involved in online gambling through different Apps. It is learnt from one of the Apps from his mobile phone that he lost more than 4.2 lakh. He had also taken multiple loans from different places to use the money in online gambling. He had also taken loans from private money lenders,” the SP told reporters.

“We have seized the gun used in the crime, cartridges and other incriminating materials from the car,” he maintained.

The SP appealed to all especially youths to stay away from online gambling. Online games and gambling destroy individuals and their families, he said.

He also appealed to all the influential individuals to stop promoting betting apps and online gaming apps.

Earlier in the day, police found the bodies of three members of the family inside a car. All the bodies bore gunshot wounds.
