Bhubaneswar: Five years after its launch by former Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, eminent author Kalandi Samal’s thought-provoking book Jaanla Tota is once again at the forefront of discussions among Odia literature enthusiasts.

Recently, a seminar brought together the Language, Literature & Culture Minister and aficionados from across the state to explore the book’s significance, which symbolizes Odia heritage and its enduring impact on Odia literary circles.

In a day-long seminar, a galaxy of esteemed personalities apart from Odia literature students gathered to delve into the nuances of ‘Jaala Tota’. The illustrious panel comprised Padma Shri Professor Damayanti Beshra, Professor Basant Panda, MP Rabi Narayan Behera, social worker Samir Mohanty, and other distinguished individuals from academia and beyond.

As they shared their insights, the seminar transformed into a vibrant melting pot of ideas with each speaker offering a unique perspective on ‘Jaala Tota’.

Language, Literature & Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj also praised ‘Jaanla Tota’ as a symbol of Odisha’s enduring heritage.

Speaking on this occasion, the Minister said, “We take immense pride in our heritage, which is deeply rooted in our culture and traditions. In Odisha, every significant event is marked by the invocation of Lord Jagannath and his sibling deities Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra.”

He continued: “In the heartwarming tale of Jaanla Tota, two young sisters, Rashmirekha and Diptirekha, embark on a noble mission to bring clean drinking water to their village. Drawing inspiration from their mother Damayanti Devi’s values and guidance since childhood, the sister duo seek the blessings of the divine Trinity before undertaking their journey which showcases the deep-rooted spiritual heritage of Odia culture.”

It is pertinent to mention that former Vice-President of India, Venkaiah Naidu, unveiled the book “Jaanla Tota” in 2019, penned by author Kalandi Samal.

Naidu took to social media to express his delight, stating, ” Delighted to have received the book ‘JAANLA TOTA’ from the author Shri Kalandi Samal in #Bhubaneswar, #Odisha today. The book tells the story of two young girls who take on a mission to provide clean drinking water to their village.”
