Baripada: The persistent and alarming rise of ‘Kangaroo Courts’ in Odisha has become a matter of concern with latest incident of mob lynching led to death of Class IX student following a Kangaroo Court hearing.
The incident occurred at Indakoli village under Tiring police station limits in Mayurbhanj district. Sambit Bindhani, a 15-year-old student of Bhutukabadi village under Rairangpur Rural police station was beaten to death by a mob comprising villagers over alleged goat theft. The mob reportedly set the victims’ bike ablaze.
As per reports, Sambit was staying at his uncle’s house in Basingi village under Bahalda police station and studying in Class IX at Basingi Government High School. On Monday afternoon, two minors including Sambit were beaten up by locals in Indakoli village over alleged goat theft after holding a kangaroo court.
Police rescued the victims and initially took them to nearby hospital, later shifting them to Rairangpur Hospital where Sambit succumbed to his injuries. Condition of the other youth is stated to be critical and has been transferred to Baripada’s PRM Medical College and Hospital.
Based on a complaint filed by victim’s father, police registered a case and arrested 11 persons so far.
More arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
