Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday announced that land acquisition for a proposed mega steel plant in Keonjhar district will commence shortly, with the company involved having already deposited the required funds.

The project, a joint venture between the JSW Group and South Korean steel major POSCO, will involve an investment of over Rs 40,000 crore. The plant is expected to have an initial capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

“The process is in an advanced stage. Land has been identified and funds have been deposited. Preparations are underway,” Majhi said, following a review of development projects in the district.

Two sites—Taramakant and Patna—have been identified for land acquisition. The Chief Minister stated that the upcoming plant will significantly boost the local economy and generate employment opportunities, particularly for the district’s youth.

Calling the project a personal mission, Majhi reiterated the state government’s commitment to infrastructure growth and industrialization in mineral-rich Keonjhar.

During his visit, the CM chaired a district-level review meeting, interacted with local MLAs, and called for their cooperation in advancing development work. He also flagged off three new ambulances and a coconut collection vehicle under the ‘Maa Tarini’ initiative, tied to the famed Ghatagaon shrine.

Majhi further assured that there is no shortage of funds for Keonjhar’s development, especially for national highway expansion and other critical projects.
