Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to revise the English spellings of various district and place names in the state to align them with their original Odia pronunciations.
According to a notification issued by the Revenue Department, the spellings of seven districts and 24 places in 11 districts will be corrected.
The proposed changes include renaming Khurda as Khoradha, Balasore as Baleshwar, Keonjhar as Kendujhar, and Khondmal as Kandhamal. Other changes include Deogarh to Debagarh, Angul to Anugol, Nayagarh to Nayagada, and Rairakhol to Redhakhol. Additionally, Kendrapara may be written as Kendrapada, and Keonjhargarh may become Kendujhargarh.
The government has invited objections and suggestions from the public and stakeholders, which must be submitted in writing with supporting documents within 15 days from the date of publication of the notice.
The notice warns that objections received after the deadline will not be entertained. If no objections are received within the specified 15-day period, the government will proceed with implementing the proposed name changes as per law.
