Bhubaneswar: Doctors at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar have successfully removed a sharp metal pin that a 10-month-old infant from Rourkela had accidentally swallowed.
As per reports, the pin had got lodged in the child’s food pipe (oesophagus), posing a serious risk. The infant was brought to Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) August 18 after continuous vomiting. Detailed examinations and X-ray imaging revealed that the metal pin was stuck in the upper part of the food pipe near the throat. As the object was sharp-edged, extracting it safely from the delicate food pipe of such a young child proved extremely challenging for the medical team.
A multi-disciplinary team comprising specialists from the ENT, Gastroenterology and Anaesthesiology departments jointly managed the case. Using an advanced endoscopic procedure, the doctors first carefully pushed the pin into the stomach and then retrieved it through the mouth with the help of a flexible endoscope inserted via the food pipe.
Following the successful procedure, the infant was kept under close observation in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for one day. The child is reported to be stable. The medical team that performed the procedure included Dr Kabikanta Samantaray, Dr Manas Ranjan Raut, Dr T Rajmohan Rao, Dr Dibyalochana Praharaj and Dr Sneha, along with the supporting medical and nursing staff.
Doctors at KIMS emphasised that timely diagnosis and intervention are crucial in such cases, particularly when the swallowed object is sharp. They credited careful planning, advanced endoscopic technology and seamless coordination among specialists from different departments for the successful outcome of this complex procedure.
