Bangiriposi: A 65-year-old farmer was killed and a woman was seriously injured after lightning struck them in Mayurbhanj district on Monday, police said.
The incident occurred around 3 pm in Andola village under Nafri panchayat in Bangiriposi police station limits. The deceased was identified as Surendra Patra. He had gone to the agricultural field with his wife and daughter, Padmavati Patra, 55, to cut grass.
Surendra’s wife had returned home to bring food when rain accompanied by thunder and lightning struck the area. Surendra was hit by lightning and died on the spot, while Padmavati sustained serious injuries and fell unconscious.
After regaining consciousness, Padmavati informed others about the incident. Villagers rushed to the spot and informed the authorities. Police and tehsil officials reached the village and initiated an investigation.
Local residents have urged the administration to provide compensation to the bereaved family as per the provisions of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department.
