Bhubaneswar: Another lion breathed its last in the Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar on Monday. While lioness Rewa passed away today, male lion ‘Krish’, born in the park in 2004, died on August 14 last year.
Rewa was 8-year-old and was brought from the Kamala Nehru Prani Sangrahalaya in Indore on December 20, 2020. She delivered three cubs on January 25, 2025.
The first cub was stillborn, while two more cubs were born following veterinary intervention. On January 26 evening, Rewa experienced complications while giving birth to a deceased cub. Despite medical treatment and care, Rewa succumbed on Monday after delivering a stillborn cub.
Lioness Rewa has contributed to lion population of Nandankanan by giving birth to 8 cubs in 3 litters. Six of those cubs are surviving now.
Following Rewa’s death, Nandankanan has 23 lions, including 15 Asiatic lions and 8 hybrid lions.
