Jayapur (Koraput): Tension prevailed in the Bariniput area of Koraput district on Friday after locals staged a protest following the stabbing death of a Class 10 student outside his school. The protesters blocked National Highway-26, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and justice for the deceased student.
The victim, identified as Mahesh Bagh, a Class 10 student of Yojana High School in Bariniput under the jurisdiction of Bariniput police outpost, was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon during the mid-day meal break.
According to reports, Mahesh had gone home for lunch as usual and was returning to school when the incident occurred. A dispute allegedly broke out between him and a non-student near the school premises, following which he was attacked with a knife.
Mahesh sustained critical injuries in the attack and was rushed to a nearby private hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment, reports said.
Following the student’s death, angry locals and family members gathered outside the Bariniput police outpost and staged a road blockade on NH-26. The protesters demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the attack and strict action against the accused. The blockade disrupted vehicular movement for several hours.
Mahesh’s father, Murali Bagh, said his son had no dispute or enmity with anyone. He claimed that Mahesh was not involved in any quarrel and demanded justice for his family.
The deceased student’s mother, Surbhi Bagh, lodged a complaint at Jayapur Sadar Police Station, alleging that her son was murdered. In her complaint, she alleged that two brothers, Aftab Hial and Rian Hial, attacked Mahesh with a knife while he was returning to school after lunch.
The family alleged that after stabbing him, the accused assaulted Mahesh before fleeing the spot.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. According to police sources, one of the accused is a former student.
SDPO Achita Mittal, along with a scientific team, visited the spot and examined the scene of the crime.
Further investigation is underway.
