Bhubaneswar: The low-pressure area over south Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal now lies as a well-marked low-pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea at 5.30 hours IST on Wednesday. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal around Wednesday. Thereafter, it is likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department said on its X handle on Wednesday morning.
Considering the forecast by the IMD, the Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has issued warnings to fishermen and asked them to not venture into the sea.
The SRC said, “Under the influence of the anticipated cyclonic system, squally wind speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over central Bay of Bengal (BoB) and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal from December 1, 2023. The wind speed is likely to reach 50 to 60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph on December 1 and the sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough.”
According to the IMD forecast, light to moderate rainfall is likely in most places with isolated heavy rainfall likely over the Nicobar Islands from November 29 to December 1, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on November 29.
Light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over the Andaman Islands on November 30. Several places in coastal Odisha are also likely to receive heavy rainfall on November 29-30.
