Jeypore: In a rare celebration of love behind prison walls, an undertrial couple tied the knot inside the Special Jail in Jeypore on Sunday after securing permission from the Vigilance Court and the state prison authorities.
The couple, identified as Nrusingh Khamari and Anamika, had been in a relationship long before they were arrested in an alleged illegal drug trafficking case. Their plans to marry were put on hold after they landed in judicial custody, with the trial in the Koraput Vigilance Court still pending.
As the case dragged on, the couple approached the jail authorities seeking permission to solemnise their marriage inside the prison. Special Jail Superintendent Santosh Kumar Patnaik forwarded their request to the Vigilance Court, which granted approval. The proposal was later cleared by the Director General of Prisons, Odisha, paving the way for the wedding.
The ceremony, held inside the Special Jail premises, turned an otherwise routine prison day into a joyous occasion. The jail was decorated for the event, and inmates and prison staff gathered to witness the couple exchange vows.
Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati attended the wedding and blessed the newlyweds. He also presented them with gifts and extended financial assistance of Rs 10,000 to help them begin their new journey.
The arrangements for the ceremony were overseen by Jail Superintendent Santosh Kumar Patnaik, Assistant Jailor Akshay Nayak and other prison officials. A special feast was also organised for inmates and jail staff to mark the occasion.
