Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area has formed in the northwest Bay of Bengal off the West Bengal and Odisha coasts today.
Under the influence of an active cyclonic circulation, the system is likely to move northwards in the next 24 hours and intensify further, weather scientist Umashankar Dash stated.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall today in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts. A Red Warning has been issued for Mayurbhanj and Balasore, indicating very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and possibility of waterlogging.
An Orange Warning has been issued for Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Cuttack and Kendrapara districts for heavy to very heavy rain. A Yellow Warning has been issued for other districts of the state.
Along with the rain, winds are likely to blow at a speed of 30 to 40 kmph along the coastal areas.
The Meteorological Centre has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and people in the warning districts to remain alert for waterlogging, traffic disruption and possible landslides in vulnerable areas.
