Low-Pressure Area Persists Over BoB; IMD Issues Yellow Warnings For Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds across various districts of Odisha, effective from September 14 to September 17.

A low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, along with the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast, persisted as of 8.30 am today. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 kilometers above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height.

According to the IMD, this system is likely to move west-northwestwards, crossing south Odisha, adjoining north Andhra Pradesh, and south Chhattisgarh over the next two days.

September 14: Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Nayagarh. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds of 30–40 kmph may also occur at isolated places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, and Bolangir.

September 15: Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecasted in Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds may also occur at isolated places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kandhamal, Koraput, and Malkangiri.

September 16: Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Rayagada. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Koraput, and Malkangiri.

In addition to these specific district warnings, the IMD has issued a general Yellow Warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds of 30–40 kmph at isolated places across Odisha until September 17.

The IMD has advised the public to remain cautious, avoid open areas during thunderstorms, and stay updated with further weather advisories.
