Bhubaneswar: Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrat Sahu on Monday directed all the district administrations to stay alert and prepared to meet any eventuality for the low pressure which is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22, 2024.
A low-pressure area is likely to form over southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22, 2024. It is likely to move initially northeastwards and concentrate into a depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24, 2024, informed the India Meteorological Department, on Monday.
“Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over central Bay of Bengal from 23rd morning. It would extend to adjoining areas of the North Bay of Bengal from 24th May, with an increase in wind speed of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph. Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough over central Bay of Bengal from 23rd May and over North Bay of Bengal from 24th May, 2024 onwards” read the release issued by India Meteorological Department.
Taking the IMD’s forecast seriously, Sahu has instructed the district collectors to keep a close watch on low-pressure system and stay prepared to meet any eventuality.
Sahu has advised fishermen not to venture into the central Bay of Bengal May 23 and North Bay of Bengal from May 24 onwards. Fishermen who were out at sea are advised to return to the coast before May 23.
Under the impact of low pressure, light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over the districts of north Odisha on May 24 and May 25.
