Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, heavy rainfall is likely to occur in the state till September 3, informed the India Meteorological Department.

Under the influence of yesterday’s active cyclonic circulation, a low pressure area formed at 5:30 am today over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coast. As a result, heavy rainfall is predicted in north Odisha, interior Odisha and coastal Odisha.

As per IMD’s prediction for today, heavy to very heavy rain is likely in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Kendujhar, Kendrapada and Mayurbhanj.  These districts have been issued orange warning.

Besides, heavy rainfall is likely in Jajpur, Sundargada, Jharsuguda, Bargada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Sonpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.  These districts have been issued yellow warning.

Wind speed of 40 to 50 km per hour will prevail in these areas, which may increase to 60 km per hour in gusts. Due to high wind speed, the sea will remain rough to very rough over the northwest Bay of Bengal and Odisha coast.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and along the Odisha and West Bengal coasts. Besides, fishermen, who are in the sea, have been asked to return to the coast immediately.

As heavy rain is likely in coastal and interior districts of Odisha under the influence of the low pressure, the administration is keeping a close watch on the situation.
