Paradip: A major mishap was averted in Paradip’s Atharbanki market on Saturday when a gas cylinder exploded inside a shop allegedly engaged in illegal refilling and sale of LPG cylinders.
According to reports, the explosion occurred while a 5 kg gas cylinder was being filled. The blast left the shopkeeper, Pintu Mekap, critically injured, while nearby traders and customers narrowly escaped.
Pintu sustained severe burns and injuries to his face, hands, and legs, with parts of his body blackened due to the gas explosion. He was rushed to Atharbanki Biju Memorial Hospital for initial treatment and later shifted to SCB Medical College & Hospital, Cuttack for advanced care.
Witnesses said the Atharbanki market, which remains busy with traders and shoppers, could have seen a far greater tragedy if the blast had triggered a chain reaction. For years, locals have complained about illegal trading of gas cylinders in the area, but the activity reportedly continues unchecked.
